Sports Coaching and Performance Science (with Foundation Year)

Course summary

Kick-off a career in a range of sporting environments by learning to maximise training and performance. We’ve recently invested £16 million in our sports infrastructure, so you’ll have access to state-of-the art facilities on campus, while our course also focuses on giving you the hands-on, practical experience needed to coach people of all ages and abilities – from grassroots to elite sports. We have strong links with local authority development units and other organisations offering work experience opportunities, coaching education courses and workshops to further enhance your studies. The foundation year equips you with essential scientific knowledge and study skills you need. Upon successful completion, you can transfer seamlessly into our degree programme where you’ll further develop your knowledge and skills in sports science, psychology and more. Our degree offers a strong foundation for those interested in working with professional athletes to improve their performance, but you could also go into primary and secondary teaching, strength and conditioning, performance analysis and sports development. You’ll get the chance to speak with potential employers at our annual Student Thesis Conference, as well as our careers team, to figure out which route is right for you.

Modules

Foundation modules include: Preparing for Learning in Higher Education Foundation in Data Analysis Introduction to Biological Sciences Introduction to Sport, Health and Exercise Science Foundation Mathematics Core modules include: Applied Human Physiology Principles of Anatomy and Biomechanics Sport, Health and Exercise Psychology Contemporary issues in Coaching Pedagogy Applied Issues n Strength and Conditioning Performance Analysis in Practice Professional Practice in Coaching and Performance Sport Psychology for Coaches All modules are subject to availability and this list may change.

Assessment method

You'll be assessed through a combination of written, practical and coursework assessments throughout your degree. Written assessment typically includes exams and multiple choice tests. Practical is an assessment of your skills and competencies. This could include presentations, school experience, work experience or laboratory work. Coursework typically includes essays, written assignments, dissertations, research projects or producing a portfolio of your work.

Qualification requirements

The foundation year is designed for applicants whose qualifications and experience do not allow direct entry to the undergraduate degree. We expect applicants to demonstrate an experience of a related subject and an aptitude for academic work which may be determined by an essay and/or interview alongside the application. For applicants with Level 3 qualifications, we will usually require a minimum of 80 points.
