Course summary

If you have always had an interest in making things, combined with the creativity to solve technical problems, then this course can help you towards becoming an engineer to meet requirements for an all-round programme of study. About the course This programme is designed to give you the flexibility and technical capability to be one of the engineers of the future, by exploring the integrated nature of engineering in general. This includes design, manufacture, maintenance, mechanical and electronic and electrical engineering. You could apply this knowledge across a huge range of industries, from food to plastics or pharmaceuticals. You could also work in utilities or even the armed forces. With this course you will gain skills and knowledge across a range of core and more specialist units. The course will suit you if you’ve completed relevant studies at an advanced level (A Level or equivalent) or have relevant industry experience and want to pursue a career in engineering. The course contains significant project-based learning including laboratory investigations, design work, projects, case studies and tutorials. Core HNC modules include:

  • engineering design
  • engineering mathematics
  • engineering science
  • managing an engineering project
Specialist HNC (first year) modules include:
  • electrical systems and fault-finding
  • operations and plant management
  • mechanical principles
  • automation, robotics and PLC ('Programmable Logic Controller')
Assessment Coursework is continually assessed through a variety of individual and group assignments, such as practical activities, written reports and presentations. Bursaries We want our courses to be accessible to students from any background, so we’ve put together a cash support package in the form of non-repayable bursaries to provide financial help where it’s really needed. Details for 2020-21 will be advertised once approved by the university regulator – the Office for Students (OfS). Please check our website - www.nottinghamcollege.ac.uk - for more information. Your career and progression The HNC/HND qualification is widely-recognized in its own right and provides students with the skills required for employment in a broad range of industries with either a managerial or technical bias. After successfully completing the Higher National Certificate, you could top-up your qualification to the Higher National Diploma at Nottingham College, or progress to a degree at a wide range of higher education providers. Alternatively, you could pursue a career in research and development, design, technical sales and production.
