Aeronautical Engineering HNC/D (HTQ)

Course summary

This is a one-year full-time Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) equivalent to Year 1 of an Hons Degree and approved as a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ). HTQs are technical qualifications that employers have helped develop so you can get the right training and skills you need to succeed at work. HTQs are an alternative to apprenticeships or degrees and may suit you if you want a more practical, employer-led study programme. The Level 4 HNC provides a broad introduction to the engineering sector as well as a focused introduction to aeronautical engineering. This develops and strengthens core skills while preparing you for more specialist subjects at Level 5 or to enter employment with the qualities necessary for job roles that require some personal responsibility. You will gain a wide range of scientific and engineering knowledge linked to practical skills obtained through research, independent and directed study, and workplace scenarios. You will be involved in vocational activities that help develop behaviours and transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are highly valued in higher education and in the workplace. By the end of Level 4 study, you will have sound knowledge of the basic concepts of aeronautical engineering. Having completed the HNC in Year 1, you have the opportunity to progress to a Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) in year two that is also approved as a HTQ. Once you have achieved the HND you may consider entering the workforce in a technical or managerial role or seek to continue your education by applying to complete a Level 6 Hons Degree qualification (top-up).

This Higher Technical Qualification is approved against occupational standards decided by employers. Learn more about Higher Technical Qualifications.

Modules

In year one you will study for the HNC in engineering: all eight units must be completed. Engineering design; engineering maths; managing a professional engineering project (Pearson set project); aircraft aerodynamics; Aircraft Electrical Power and Distribution Systems; airframe mechanical systems; composite materials for aerospace applications; turbine rotary wing mechanical and flight systems. After successful completion of the HNC in year one, you will study a further eight units for the HND in year two. Professional engineering management; Further Mathematics; Aircraft Flight Control Systems; Aircraft Propulsion Principles and Technology; Aircraft Structural Integrity; Avionic Systems; Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Design and Performance; Advanced Turbine Rotary Wing Aircraft Mechanical and Flight Systems.

Assessment method

You will undertake a range of both written and practical assignments, presentations and in-class controlled assessments.
