Course summary
The HND Applied Biology, is studied on a full-time basis. The course provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in their sector, placing strong emphasis on the effective use and combination of both knowledge and skills. Students study a variety of mandatory and optional modules, ranging from Cell Biology and Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways to Laboratory Techniques and Analysis of Data. The Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Applied Sciences offers students a specialist pathway in Biology designed to support progression into relevant occupational areas or on to degree-level study. The Higher National Diploma is referenced against professional body standards and meet the mandatory qualification requirements of the Level 5 Technician Scientist Higher Apprenticeship standard, providing apprenticeship status and progression to direct employment.

At Level 5 there are two core units, which includes one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment. The units are: • Analysis of Scientific Data and Information • Applied Sciences Research Project (Pearson-set) The specialist modules include: Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Immunology, Infectious Diseases and Diagnosis, Science Laboratory Management.
Assessment method
All students on the HND Applied Biology will experience a variety of assessment methods, including written assignments, poster presentations, laboratory reports and evidence based portfolios.
