OVERVIEW UWS's BA English as a Second Language is a top-up degree which is designed for EU and international students for whom English is not their native language but who are looking to become proficient in English and to expand their knowledge of intercultural identities, teacher education, and analysing discourse. The degree will provide you with English language skills that will open up a range of career opportunities with organisations around the world. This one or two-year course offers entry at degree year level, building on your studies from your home institution, with a range of core and optional modules on Academic English, Cultural Studies, Teacher Training, Dissertation Research, Business English and many more With an emphasis on small group teaching, you will study all aspects of the English language. You will refine and expand your knowledge and understanding of the language and its cultures, with a focus on authentic language development. Graduates from this degree will be fully confident of using English as a global language in the world of education or business. The degree also offers an opportunity to those who intend to train, as TESOL professionals, and teach English in the UK or internationally to develop these skills through the optional Theory and Practice in English Language Teaching Module. International applicants only UWS's BA English as a Second Language is only open to students who are second-language speakers of English. PRACTICAL FOCUS Class sizes are small and lessons are interactive in nature which allow you to develop languages skills through group discussions, presentations and reading and writing tasks. Further Study Upon graduation, our students have continued their studies at postgraduate level (MA, MEd, MSc) in TESOL, Education, Social Sciences, Business and other related areas.

Modules

This one or two-year course offers entry at degree year level, building on your studies from your home institution. You will study English language and culture modules, choosing from various related subjects to increase your fluency and confidence in English and your knowledge of English-speaking culture. YEAR 3 (BA degree) - Over two trimesters, you will further refine your study of English language and learn about English-speaking culture. You will study four core and two optional modules including: Advanced English Language 1 & 2, Cultures of the English-speaking World 1 & 2. YEAR 4 (BA (Hons)) - You will study two core modules English Proficiency 1 & 2, and undertke a compulsory dissertation (over two semesters) where you can specialise in a topic of your choice which will be aligned to your interests and career ambitions. In addition you will select two optoinal modules from a list including: Academic Writing, Analysing Discourse, Meaning and Language, Business English, Theory and Practice of English Language Teaching.

Assessment method

Classes develop languages skills through group discussions, presentations and reading and writing tasks. Lessons use a combination of the latest English language resources and authentic materials. The maximum class size is 25 students. Classes are usually 3 hours in duration (e.g. 0900-1200) and, during this time, there will be a short break of approximately 15 minutes. The assessment varies from module to module, but it typically involves a combination of presentations, portfolios, written assignment and class tests.

For Year 3 entry applicants will be required to have a minimum of 2 years’ of University study at Level 7 and Level 8. For entry to the Honours year applicants will be required to have at least 3 years' study of University study at least at Level 9 (Year 3) which must be in English as a second or other language validated by a HEI. Applicants must have a minimum IELTS 6.0, or equivalent.

DUO LINGO In addition ot the above English Language tests, for 2022-23 entry, the University has approved the use of the online Duolingo English test as evidence of English language ability. UWS will accept an overall score between 90-115 with no component score below 90. For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. The reason for this is that it’s essential that you are able to read, speak and understand the English language to get the most out of your time at UWS. All international applicants are required to meet minimum English language standards, with the exception of: // Native speakers of English // Erasmus students (unless advised otherwise) // non-Erasmus students from EU partner institutions (your institution must provide confirmation of your English language ability in the absence of a formal qualification) The qualifications above must have been gained within two years prior to the start of your course at UWS.

TUITION FEE INFORMATION - SCOTTISH STUDENTS: Eligible Scottish domiciled students can usually apply to have their tuition fees paid for them each year of their studies by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). If you're not sure about your eligibility, you should contact SAAS. You need to apply to SAAS each year of study to have your tuition fees paid directly to UWS. TUITION FEE INFORMATION - UK, IRISH & GIBRALTARIAN STUDENTS: Eligible students who are domiciled in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland as well as from the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar or the Republic of Ireland will qualify for tuition fees of £9,250 per academic session of study to a maximum of three years if you are studying on a four year bachelor degree course (eg. BAcc (Hons) / BA (Hons) / BEng (Hons) / BSc (Hons)). So, if your degree is four years' duration, you will only be charged tuition fees for three years. Similarly, if you are studying a five year integrated master's degree course (eg. MEng (Hons)) the you will only be charged tuition fees for four years.
