Course summary

This Foundation Degree with Integrated Foundation Entry is designed for those who want to study for the foundation degree but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to start just yet. The foundation entry modules include: Art & Design Studies, Design Investigation, Specialism Skills and Drawing and Image Communication, giving you the opportunity to explore a range of design practices before progressing to Year One of the Foundation Degree in your chosen specialism. On the Foundation Degree you will gain a range of technical knowledge which you will combine with your creativity in order to produce ideas that challenge contemporary design drawing on historic interior design practice and design history. Unique to the course is its focus on the diverse retail and leisure industries, allowing you to showcase relevant and engaging retail interior designs with the wider social and leisure spaces associated with great retail centres. This may be in the form of retail locations (high street stores, malls, shopping centres, boutique stores and department stores), leisure spaces (bars, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels) or public spaces. This is a creative discipline that will encourage you to expand the boundaries of current design thinking to create new experiences and relationships between technology, people, space and places. As you develop, you will be encouraged and supported to explore your own personal design style. You will further be encouraged to develop an individual and unique approach to design, which will allow you to question the function and visual potential of our interior environments. The journey will explore historical and contemporary design in order to influence you in creating thought out and functional concepts. You will build an awareness of digital technology and how it may underpin design concepts in order to create contemporary spaces that engage with the emerging digital society we now occupy. The embedding of digital media will allow you to explore and manipulate the tone, mood and function of contemporary commercial interiors.

Qualification requirements

For students entering via the optional Foundation Entry route, the following admission criteria will apply: - • Portfolio and successful individual interview. • In lieu of a portfolio, applicants may complete a project as an alternative demonstration of ability. UK and EU Entry: Equivalent international qualifications will be considered towards meeting the general entry requirements. For students entering directly onto the Foundation Degree, the following admission criteria will apply: - UK Applicants: Except in exceptional circumstances, UK applicants must attend an interview with portfolio. Once your application has been processed you will be sent a letter stating the date that you are required to attend, and what will be required of you. If it is not possible for you to attend on the date proposed, please contact us to rearrange a date or agree alternative arrangements. All successful candidates must have achieved the following: • A minimum of 64 UCAS tariff points • Relevant Level 3 qualification / A Levels (grade A-C) • Foundation Entry Design / Art and Design • Access qualification in a related field • Portfolio that is art or design based All applications should normally demonstrate satisfactory performance at GCSE level in the form of at least five passes at grade 4 or above to include GCSE Maths and English, equivalent qualifications may also be considered. Mature students may not meet the standard entry requirements but they may still be considered for a place on the course. In lieu of a portfolio, applicants may complete a project as an alternative demonstration of ability. European Applicants: European applicants may not be able to attend an interview in the UK. Once your application has been processed, you should submit an e-portfolio, CD or DVD of your recent work; this will be followed by a telephone interview.

From your personal statement and interview, we consider your motivation and commitment to success, and any relevant experience you may have. For some courses, we may also ask for a portfolio of appropriate work or an audition, or you may be required to find a work placement prior to enrolment. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check: To gain access to some courses you may need to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. If you have criminal convictions or cautions, please do not be put off from applying for the course. Your acceptance on to the course will depend on the nature of any convictions and will be at the discretion of the University Centre and your placement provider. Interview: All applicants are invited to attend an interview with either the Course Leader or Course Tutor. You will be notified of your interview by our Admissions Team who will also update UCAS Track with details of your application.

English language requirements

EU students, for whom English is not the first language, will be required to evidence an IELTS score or 6.0 or equivalent. Equivalences include: • TOEFL written examination score of 550 plus a test of written English (at 4) • TOEFL Computer Equivalent score of 230 • Proficiency in English (Cambridge) at Grade C or above
