Course summary

Explore and analyse complex data sets to solve practical problems. You'll expand your critical thinking skills and gain hands-on experience of data governance. Data science is an exciting and high-profile field of work. Globally, we produce increasing amounts of data every second and data recognised as a key asset in economic, business and cultural life. Being able to analyse data is crucial to gaining information, insight and understanding. This course will allow you to study key topics, from data management and analytics to statistics and programming. You'll develop the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and confidence to be able to convert data into valuable insights. As part of this course, you’ll:

  • Study data analysis techniques
  • Learn to analyse and create meaningful visualisations from data sets
  • Study key topics, from data management and analytics, to machine learning, statistics and programming
  • Develop your theoretical knowledge, practical skills and confidence to be able to convert data into valuable insights
  • Learn how to apply your knowledge to investigate social issues, such as crime connections and business insight
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of core data analysis techniques informed by a deeper knowledge of data principles and practical considerations
  • Use open source data and tools such as python and SQL, tableau and R and Matlab
  • Learn how to identify data to inform your investigation, ensure quality results, select appropriate analysis techniques for the task and choose methods to convey the message
  • Understand the importance of ethics and data governance in your approach to data science

Tailoring your learning In your third year, you’ll complete a year-long data science project drawing on theoretical principles to rigorously design investigations, analyse data and represent findings from data.
