One of Europe’s most creative and distinctive civilisations, Italy has a fascinating and influential history. Study Italian with us and you will learn the language in the context of Italian culture, past and present, including leading works of literature and cinema. You do not need to have studied Italian previously to take our programme. Intensive language tuition, and a year spent studying or working in Italy, will teach you how to read, write and speak the language to a high standard, including in translation. Another attractive characteristic of this programme is its flexibility. This means that in Years 1 and 2, you will choose option courses drawn from a broad list of disciplines in addition to Italian. From the University’s own Italian Society to the Italian Cultural Institute, you will find many places in Edinburgh to indulge your interest in one of the world’s great cultures, while enjoying the cinemas, theatres, libraries and galleries of one of its favourite festival cities.
