We look critically at the differing political and ethical claims on childhood and youth that inform contemporary policy and practice. You’ll explore new and original ways of thinking about and working with children and young people. Through the course, you’ll learn to:
  • communicate effectively with child- and youth-focused professionals
  • carry out empirical research with children and young people
  • transfer your analytical, writing and other skills to the workplace.
You can study modules across anthropology, international development and child rights, sociology, gender studies, sexual health, psychology, media and social work.

For details about the part-time course, contact us at [email protected] We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity. We’ll do our best to provide as much optional choice as we can, but timetabling constraints mean it may not be possible to take some module combinations. The structure of a small number of courses means that the order of modules or the streams you choose may determine whether modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown below. Core modules Core modules are taken by all students on the course. Options Alongside your core modules, you can choose options to broaden your horizons and tailor your course to your interests. This list gives you a flavour of our options, which are kept under review and may change, for example in response to student feedback or the latest research. While it’s our aim for students to take their preferred combinations of options, this can’t be guaranteed and will be subject to timetabling. Work placement We have strong links with a number of local and national organisations. This helps with securing volunteer work and/or work experience as part of the course. Many of our graduates find employment in non-profit organisations, schools and social research settings.

Entry requirements

You should normally have a lower second-class (2.2) undergraduate honours degree or above, or be able to demonstrate the ability to study at the appropriate level. Your undergraduate degree can be in any subject. Other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis, and in certain circumstances you may be accepted on to the course if you can demonstrate the ability to study at the appropriate level. You may be accepted on to the course if you have equivalent professional qualifications and/or professional experience. We particularly welcome applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential, enthusiasm and commitment to study.
