MA Choreography (Taught)

Course summary

The MA and MFA Choreography offer a stimulating environment in which to explore and develop your choreographic practice and expertise. Whether you’re in the early stages of your career or an experienced dance artist, these programmes present opportunities to engage with contemporary ideas, concepts and propositions within the choreographic field. The taught programme of the MA (first year of the MFA) encourages you to explore your current practice and develop as develop as an innovative, independent choreographer.

  • You will encounter interdisciplinary perspectives and collaborative practices, creating work across a range of settings and media.
  • You will be challenged to experiment, take risks and continuously create: developing your individual artistic voice.
  • You will engage in critical dialogue with your work from a variety of perspectives.
  • Two of the modules offered in the taught component provide opportunities for collaborative exchanges with other artistic practices.
  • An independent project, will allow you build on the ideas encountered in the programme and undertake self-directed research, experimentation and reflection.

Principal study options

During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:

Main specialism

Only one specialism is studied. It may be possible to study a further instrument, but this will not contribute towards the qualification.

Instrument/specialisms

For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.

Entry requirements

You will normally have prior choreographic experience and/or have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in an appropriate or related subject, or hold an overseas award of equivalent standard (eg USA degree GPA of 3.00). English Language competency requirements also apply.


Assessment locations

In the event of a successful assessment, applicants may be invited for a further interview prior to being made an offer.

Remote assessment recordings may be accepted in the event that you cannot attend an assessment in person.

Additional information

Applicants for this programme will be asked to submit an online portfolio showcasing their skills You should upload or provide an online link to choreographed work that you have created. It should be between 12 -15 minutes in length, and include: an excerpt of a solo; an excerpt of a group work; and an excerpt of a rehearsal, workshop or class in which you are an active participant. You should also include: a comment on the material presented, and on the process for its creation/devising/realization; and a comment on some of the artistic problems you encountered, and how you went about solving them.
