Course summary

This e-learning programme offers training in the management of gastrointestinal and/or hepatobiliary diseases, equipping you with the specialist knowledge and skills needed to collaborate effectively in patient care. You will develop expertise in managing gastrointestinal and/or hepatobiliary disorders, enhance your clinical skills, and engage in reflective practice for ongoing professional development. You will:

  • Develop specialist knowledge and skills for collaborative care in gastrointestinal and/or hepatobiliary disorders.
  • Gain transferable training in the management of these diseases.
  • Enhance patient care in gastroenterology.
You will need to be computer literate and have access to an up-to-date computer with camera facilities. To earn the PgCert, you must complete two 30-credit modules, with options varying by start date: September (Trimester 1) start options:
  • September: Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Disorders
  • February: Management of Gastrointestinal Disorders
January (Trimester 2) start options:
  • February: Management of Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • June: Management of Liver Disorders
June (Trimester 3) start options:
  • June: Management of Liver Disorders
  • September: Management of Gastrointestinal Disorders or Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Disorders

Assessment method

Two methods of assessment will be used to evaluate your performance against Level 7 grade descriptors, with formative assessment and feedback provided within each module:

  • Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Disorders: Oral presentation demonstrating professional learning and critical evaluation in the care of a patient with inflammatory bowel disease, supported by evidence to meet module outcomes.
  • Management of Gastrointestinal Disorders: A retrospective account of a patient journey, critically evaluating the knowledge gained during the module and applying up-to-date evidence in the care of a patient with gastrointestinal disease.
  • Management of Liver Disorders: A disease-based study relevant to your practice, involving a critical analysis of evidence-based literature related to interventions and management.
  • Evidencing Personal and Professional Development: Assessment of your development portfolio.


Entry requirements

You must have completed a relevant healthcare undergraduate programme and be an appropriately qualified healthcare professional actively engaged in clinical practice. For example: - A qualified nurse - A dietitian - A pharmacist - A physiotherapist ‎ ‎ ‎
