Course summary

This course delivers key academic, analytical and employability skills. It covers government and political institutions, political theory and ideas and international relations and politics, grounded in core skills of political analysis and research methods training. You will study government and political institutions at all levels, the basis of political argument in political concepts and ideas and the critical international context of contemporary politics. The programme considers government and political institutions in a local, national and international context, political theory and ideas and international relations and politics, supported by the development of skills of political analysis and research methods training. It is delivered by nationally and internationally-recognised research active staff who have an excellent record of original publication. You will have the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner institutions in Europe and North America. Our Centre for Volunteering and Community Leadership also offers you the chance to gain valuable work placement experience and to access leadership programmes. We believe our graduates will develop the knowledge and skills to progress to careers in both governmental and non-governmental public sector organisations, or to further study at major universities in the UK. You will also be able to find appropriate graduate careers by developing both academic and generic analytical, critical and communication skills alongside personal and professional management skills, which will enhance your employability. Successful completion of this course will give you the opportunity to progress to postgraduate taught courses or postgraduate research. You will be well equipped for further study in areas such as international relations, international political economy and development, political and public communications/relations etc.
