Course summary

Whether you’ve set your sights on working at a major publishing house or a small press, our innovative Publishing MA will equip you with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience you’ll need to pursue a career in the fast-changing publishing industry. Through a series of vibrant taught classes, you will learn about marketing, social media management, editing, proofreading, freelancing, digital publishing, and entrepreneurship while exploring the history and potential future of this thriving industry. The British publishing industry is one of the largest and most important in the world and directly employs 29,000 people in the UK while supporting more than 70,000 jobs. Like its global peers, it has undergone significant disruption in the past 20 years bringing new trends, opportunities and challenges. To help you find a role in this rapidly changing, competitive space, you will learn how to develop, commission and acquire content (online or offline), and study the skills of editing and proofreading. You will also learn about independent and self-publishing models, small-scale ventures, and publishing roles in non-media organisations. During your time with us – either 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time – you will gain essential editorial, marketing, and production skills, while at the same time learning about the different publishing formats and platforms currently available.
