Combine your passions for communicating and culture whilst exploring the unique relationship between English and Chinese language. This specialist MA will help you build the foundations for a career in Chinese/English translation and interpreting. Over the course duration, you will:

Modules
Over the duration of this course, you will study a range of modules and deliver a translation project. CORE MODULES Practical Translation - build up a portfolio of translations in various areas, including literary, technical, business and medicine. Bi-lateral Interpreting between Chinese and English - is a practical introduction into different forms of interpreting. Introduction to Translation Theory - examines different theoretical approaches to translation which have been prominent in the Western World. Translator's Toolbox - explores computer assisted translation tools. Targeted Translation Project - Demonstrate your practical skills in a targeted translation project. Language Modules - You will take either Mandarin Discourse Skills for Language Professionals (for non-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese) or English for Language Professionals (for non-native speakers of English). OPTIONAL MODULES Audiovisual Translation: Accessibility - uncovers the theory and practice of translating for subtitling for the deaf/hard of hearing and audiodescription. Chinese-English Community Interpreting - focus on different aspects of community interpreting and explores communication in different settings whilst developing a cultural awareness. Bi-lateral Interpreting Between Chinese and English 2 - This module aims to equip students with the advanced knowledge and skills required to provide professional standard bi-lateral interpreting between English and Chinese. Translating Texts - introduces translation text types before giving you the opportunity to begin your own translations. Technology Tools for Translation - explores a wide range of technology-enabled translation projects, covering localisation process and industry development.
Assessment method
Assessment is by the translation project.
Entry requirements
2.1(Upper 2nd class hons degree or international equivalent) 58% grade point average for UK degrees; applicants whose first language is not Chinese should also hold a HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi/Chinese Proficiency Test) Level 6 certificate. Applicants may be requested to attend a video interview as part of the application process; IELTS: 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element)
