Course summary
Build your knowledge and skills in the physical care, repair, conservation, restoration and refurbishment of buildings. The combination of lectures, site visits, tutorials and an optional year-long paid industry placement will prepare you for a range of routes in the construction and surveying sector, including building surveying, property management, project management, or building regulation. Flexible pathways: this course is designed around a common first year with BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and BSc (Hons) Construction Project Management, allowing you to transfer to these courses after successful completion of Year 1. Gain industry experience with the option to take part in a year-long paid work placement. Live, real-world design and build projects guided by our panel of industrial advisers enable you to develop the professional skills to stand out in the sector. Learn using industry-standard facilities, resources and equipment, including a designated design studio space, specialist laboratories (materials and immersive visualisation) and Mac and PC suites with industry-standard software (such as Revit, AutoCAD, MS Project and BCIS database). Professionally accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE). Graduate on the preferred professional route to RICS, CIOB and CABE chartered membership.
Modules
Year 1: Understand the technologies, services, construction methods and materials used in domestic buildings. Gain knowledge in the ICT tools needed to deliver construction projects. Work on an industry-led group project to design an energy-efficient housing development. Year 2: Develop specialist skills to predict and manage costs of developments as well as the contractual frameworks that lead to successful projects. You will work on an industry-led group project to design, or retrofit, a complex high-rise building. Placement year (optional): Boost your studies with a paid year-long placement in a leading surveying company in the UK or abroad. Final year: Gain the skills and technical knowledge necessary to survey buildings and identify defects. Real-world projects involving the refurbishment of historic/listed buildings, as well as new-build, will help you understand the surveyor’s role and the client’s requirements, while developing project management skills.
