WHAT WILL I LEARN? You will develop research techniques in aspects of zoo animal welfare, behaviour and population management and consider the wider roles of the modern zoo in conservation and education. Students undertake a work placement in each year of the programme and will attend a residential study programme at one of the UK's leading research-based zoo collections . You will have the opportunity to develop your academic research through the year 2 module on Applied Industrial Research, choosing an area relevant to a specific sector of interest. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? Much of the assessment is coursework based, i.e. essays, reports, practical portfolios and seminar presentations. Practical activities, in-class assessments and a limited number of exams also play a part. WHERE CAN I GO FROM HERE? This programme will provide progression to the BSc (Hons) Zoo Biology (top-up), from which students have potential to progress onto the MSc Applied Zoo Biology. Sparsholt graduates now work in a variety of roles in the zoo and conservation sectors including keeper, nutritionist, veterinary nursing, education, media and marketing.

Course details


Year 1 (Level 4) will provide the foundation in animal science and academic skills required for subsequent years, contextualised to the Zoo Industry. Specialist units in Exotic Animal Management and Zoo History and Culture will underpin the role of zoos in modern society: • Academic Skills • Anatomy and Physiology • Industry Skills • Principles of Biology • Work Practice 1 • Exotic Animal Management • Zoo History and Culture Year 2 (Level 5) will apply the knowledge gained in year one to develop the skills and knowledge required for employment in the zoo industry. Research, data collection and industry engagement will be fundamental. Core units include: • Animal Health • Applied Industrial Research • Population Biology • Work Practice 2 • Zoo Industry Ethics and Legislation • Zoo Animal Nutrition • Exotic Animal Behaviour, Welfare and Husbandry

Assessment method

Much of the assessment is coursework based, i.e. essays, reports, practical portfolios and seminar presentations. Practical activities, in-class assessments and a limited number of exams also play a part.

Sparsholt offers a College Bursary of up to £750 per annum to all eligible students and an Aim Higher Bursary to £1200 to all students progressing from a Sparsholt Level 3 course to a FdSc or BSc.
