Course summary

On this course, you'll receive instruction in core public health skills, including epidemiology, statistics, and research methods. You'll also gain in-depth knowledge of a range of topics such as evidence-based public health, global health economics, and 21st-century global public health challenges. The curriculum's unique focus on the social determinants of health distinguishes it from similar programmes at other Greater Manchester universities. This course aligns with the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework (2016). It will equip you with essential skills to effectively interpret and understand key areas of health research and apply this insight to inform and drive policy and public health initiatives. During your studies, you can leverage the expertise and resources of our partners, including external public health practitioners and research staff from across the University. Although the programme does not include a placement or work experience, you will have the opportunity to engage in external or internal applied research projects as part of your dissertation. The University of Salford’s School of Health and Society is an institutional member of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER). You will:

  • Gain a public health qualification with a focus on the social determinants of health.
  • Be exposed to significant issues prevalent in public health practice both nationally and globally.
  • Develop a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach to public health.

Modules

This course is available on a full-time basis over one year or part-time over two to three years, with the following exit awards: Full-time:

  • Postgraduate Diploma: Complete five modules over eight months.
  • Master's: Complete five modules plus a dissertation over one year.
Note: There is no full-time option for the Postgraduate Certificate. Part-time:
  • Postgraduate Certificate: Complete two or three modules over eight months.
  • Postgraduate Diploma: Complete five modules over two years.
  • Master's: Complete five modules plus a dissertation over two or three years.
Modules
  • Core modules: Epidemiology and Statistics for Public Health, Research Methods Applied to Public Health, Evidence-Based Public Health, Global Health Economics, and Dissertation.
  • Optional modules (choose one): 21st Century Global Public Health Challenges, and Public Health within Allied Health Professions.

Assessment method

Assessment will be based on a variety of strategies, including written assessments, examinations, project reports, oral presentations, and a research project or dissertation.


Entry requirements

To gain a place on the MSc Public Health, you must submit a personal statement and meet the following entry requirements: - Undergraduate degree: We accept an honours degree, normally 2.2 or above, preferably in a health-related subject, or an equivalent academic or professional qualification from the UK or elsewhere. - English qualification: An English qualification is required for entry, so ensure your writing style and expression are clear and professional in your statement. - Experience: Additionally, you need to provide an academic or work-related CV and two references: at least one should be academic, while the second can be either academic or work-related (paid or unpaid).
