Course summary
This course can be studied full-time over 1 year, achieving a Higher National Certificate in Art and Design (Graphic Design) qualification, or over 2 years, achieving a Higher National Diploma in Art and Design (Graphic Design) qualification. This course is designed for anyone with an interest in a new direction for visual communication and will provide opportunities to work in the broader disciplines of the design industry. Delivery of the course will be at specialist studios at Matthew Boulton College. This course takes traditional graphic design values and skill sets and applies them to a new platform of interactivity and visual communication. It will cover many different disciplines from print to motion graphics and app design to sonic performance. Students are encouraged to draw inspiration from all areas of art and design as well as bringing their own life experiences to develop an individual visual style. All students will work on live projects for external clients and have the chance to collaborate with industry professionals in our mentoring scheme.
Modules
The HNC course consists of 8 modules, totalling 120 credits, titled: Contextual Studies Darkroom Techniques Graphic Design Practices Individual Project (Pearson-set) Packaging Design Professional Development Techniques and Processes Typography
Assessment method
The course is assessed through a range of project briefs across broad design disciplines. You will produce sketchbook work to record ideas and produce a series of manual and digital outcomes such as animations, magazines and portfolios. You will also get the opportunity to exhibit your work.
Qualified teacher status (QTS)
To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

GCSE English at Grade C or 4 is desirable but not essential. We will accept Level 2 equivalences for English in place of GCSEs. We encourage applications from students who do not meet the entry requirements outlined but can demonstrate ability through work experience, portfolio of evidence or successful interview.

You will be required to attend an interview at the College's Matthew Boulton site prior to an offer being made to you.
Portfolio
You will be required to bring a portfolio of art work to your interview for consideration prior to an offer being made to you.
Institutions Own Test (IOT)
If you do not hold a Level 2 English and/or Maths qualification you maybe required to undertake an initial assessment to ascertain your current literacy and/or numeracy levels and/or a free writing assessment.
English language requirements
Students whose first language is not English must have a minimum standard of English at IELTS Level 5.5 with no element below 5.0.
