Course summary

As part of revalidation, the course title for BA Graphic Arts will change to ‘Graphic Communication Design’ for 2023/24 entry. Learn to create innovative and effective visual communications using a variety of physical and digital media. You’ll develop the practical and critical skills of a graphic artist and use research insights to guide your design. After the first semester you’ll choose to specialise in either graphic design, illustration, motion design or photography. Our facilities include large scale flatbed printers; letterpress and screen printing facilities; 3D scanner and printer; Risograph digital printer; book-binding facilities; the latest photography technology and studios; and motion design software. Input from creative professionals ensures this course is at the forefront of current practice, helping you identify the right career path and build your networks. You’ll hone your professional skills working on live briefs and design projects across print and digital media. You can even get involved with our award winning in-house design studio, Studio 3015. As part of your degree you’ll visit studios, galleries and cultural spaces, attend lectures and workshops by leading design studios, and exhibit your work at our degree show and London showcase. We’ll also encourage you to prepare entries for prestigious international competitions, such as the Penguin Student Design Awards and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Student Design Awards.

Modules

You will study a variety of topics that cover the fundamental aspects of Graphic Arts and you will have the opportunity to tailor your course to your interests by choosing some of your modules. Some of the modules you may study include Historical and Critical Contexts; Research in Contemporary Issues; Specialist Practice and Skills; Professional Planning and Evaluation; Visual Culture. Assessment method

You’ll learn through a mix of studio assignments, workshops, lectures and seminars, one-to-one tutorials, guest lectures, externally partnered projects and study visits. These teaching and learning methods will develop your transferable skills alongside subject-specific knowledge, and enable you to become increasingly independent in preparation for the workplace. The studio set up and small-team approach reflect commercial studio practices, and you’ll learn how to work to set briefs, manage your time and workload, communicate ideas, and pitch and present your work. You’ll receive informal feedback throughout your studies – from your tutors, in group critiques and through exercises such as portfolio reviews by external professionals. Assessed work will include your portfolio and reflective journal, presentations and written assignments. If you choose the study abroad option, we will assess the work you do while at the partner institution.
