More about the Professional Placement Year A Professional Placement Year (PPY), traditionally known as a sandwich year, is where a student undertakes a period of work with an external organisation for between 9-13 months. The placement occurs between the students' second and third years of undergraduate study. Students can engage in up to 3 placements to make up the total time and are required to source the placement(s) themselves with support from the Careers & Employability Team.

Modules

Year 1 will give you a broad understanding of today’s business environment, from organisational operation, to trends in economic thinking, to the importance of data in business. You’ll cover topics such as Organisations and the Business Environment; Economics and Globalisation; and Managing Data. In Year 2 you’ll take your skills forward and focus on the inner workings of businesses, developing the skills that employers look. During this year you’ll also have the chance to plan a simulated business by yourself or with fellow students in the pathway module. You will also learn to form opinions on how businesses manage challenges, you’ll work on projects and use business techniques to solve problems. Finally, Year 3 will see you undertake an in-depth business research project in International Business, and explore the knowledge and obtain the skills in cross-cultural management by taking the pathway module. Again, you’ll choose other topics that excite you, from Managing Sustainability to Organisational Strategy. For more information please refer to our website.

Assessment method

You'll be assessed in a wide range of ways that will test your business knowledge and management skills. These could include presentations, work related projects, group-work, computer based simulations, podcasts, examinations, essays, videos and business reports.
