Course summary

Gain the knowledge and skills required for studying the biology of the mind. This course prepares you for a career in research by offering:

  • lectures taught by leading cognitive neuroscientists in one of the largest psychology units in the UK
  • one-to-one expert supervision on your personal research project
  • hands-on experience with neuroimaging (fMRI)
  • introductions to a vast array of cognitive neuroscience techniques.
You have the opportunity to explore a range of cognitive neuroscience fields – from philosophy of science and research methods to consciousness, addiction and social neuroscience. Supervision is available across a range of topics, through our research groups in Behavioural and Clinical Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental and Clinical Psychology, and Social and Applied Psychology.

Modules

We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity. Core modules are taken by all students on the course. They give you a solid grounding in your chosen subject and prepare you to explore the topics that interest you most.

Entry requirements

You should normally have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above. Your undergraduate degree should be in psychology or a closely related subject such as neuroscience. You may also be considered for the course if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.
