Why study this course? Our Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) is a four-year degree course with a built-in foundation year (Year 0) – it’s the ideal course if you’re interested in studying medicinal chemistry or drug discovery related subjects at university but you can't meet the necessary entry requirements required to start a standard degree. The foundation year is intended to prepare you for your subsequent years of studying chemistry and subjects allied to the pharmaceutical industries, but will also provide you with key study and laboratory skills that will help you succeed at undergraduate level. More about this course This four-year programme has been designed with an integrated foundation year to allow you to explore key areas of chemistry at the beginning of your studies. As a foundation year student, you’ll be well-equipped to enter Year 1 of your degree, having built your confidence and acquired essential scientific knowledge and techniques at Year 0. You will spend a number of your classes in our state-of-the-art superlab – one of Europe’s largest and most advanced teaching labs – which has 280 workstations and a wide range of cutting-edge scientific equipment. Following your foundation year, you will study the same subjects and get the same choice of modules as those who study our Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery BSc (Hons) degree. This course is the perfect start to university if you’re just beginning your journey into the world of chemistry or pharmaceutical science. You'll graduate with a full undergraduate degree with the same title and award as those who studied the traditional three-year course. Should you decide during your foundation year that you’d like to specialise in a different area of study, there is some flexibility to allow you to do this.

Assessment method

Depending on the modules you choose to study, assessments include coursework (eg problem-solving exercises, written assignments, practical reports or dissertations), practical exams (eg poster presentations or oral examinations) and written exams (eg formal examinations or in-class tests).
