Course summary

This exclusive, accelerated two-year Degree course, in partnership with Falmouth University, has been designed with input from fashion industry employers (from high street to high end and pureplay) to create a new breed of graduate who will become the next generation of business intrapreneurs, entrepreneurs, fashion innovators and pioneers. It will equip you with the strategic decision-making, leadership and problem-solving skills to become an entrepreneurial and visionary fashion business leader of the future. The aim of the course is to develop highly effective, talented and committed fashion graduates. You will work closely with fashion industry professionals, role models and mentors to gain a wide and clear understanding of the business. The course offers inside knowledge of industry strategies and cultures globally, combined with key business skills and essential fashion industry management knowledge. The programme is also designed to develop your entrepreneurial skills across multiple subjects and incorporates areas such as brand management, business innovation, product development, business economics, leadership and management. Through class and seminar lectures, research and guest speakers, students will receive the most current information available, pertaining not only to the apparel industry, but also to global trends in finance, economics, management, marketing, technology, and other disciplines which impact fashion industries around the world. The course also includes the FRA unique experience:

  • Unique two year condensed delivery
  • Live Industry Projects, led by employers, to build your experience and portfolio
  • A three-week industry experience each year with one of the 140 fashion retail brand partners working with the FRA – to provide hands on practical experience of different roles and gain industry contacts & experience
  • Industry Mentor throughout your course
  • Course taught by experienced fashion retail industry professionals
You will study for three study blocks during the academic year between September and the following August (15 weeks in each). Our two year delivery also means you will only have to pay fees for two years rather than three, saving a full year’s fees and living costs. *Subject to meeting the expected levels of attendance in accordance with FRA’s Attendance Monitoring Policy. This course is due to be re-validated during the academic year 2020/21, so course content might change to align with current business needs to enhance employability on graduation.

Modules

Delivered in an accelerated model over 2 years, you will utilise the summer period to study over three study blocks instead of two. The structure of this course has been designed around study at Level 4 (developing foundational knowledge and awareness), Level 5 (high levels skills development and synthesis of information) and Level 6 (your launch pad for your career. Common Modules which are taught across each degree include:

Business Management Core Modules are: LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES How to lead and manage people and projects in the fashion environment. A diverse range of topics include understanding the concept of management and leadership, personal and professional development, IT technologies for communication and management, organisational behaviour, business policy and strategy. Look at the broad issues facing leaders today and how to operate in an ethical environment. Industry specialists will share advice on the role of a leader in today's global market. BUSINESS ECONOMICS Explore the ever changing balance of market stability within the fashion industry and compare the performance of individual companies which operate within the four market structures. Understand the behaviour of businesses, both domestic and international, through economic theory as well as policies that have an impact on the industry and the world. FASHION RETAIL MANAGEMENT Utilise current knowledge to develop research skills, creative and analytical approaches, alongside the application of technical skills to support an active role in the fashion retail industry. Gain an understanding of the operational and financial skills used within fashion retail management. Examine management challenges within the sector and the use of data analysis to inform HR and organisational business strategies. PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Look at the process, rationale and mechanisms used to create new products including the influences of new design directions, stylistic decisions, brand DNA and commercial considerations which influence the architecture for a specific season. Understand how brands at different market levels adopt different methodologies in constructing seasonal collections depending on their role as directional/commercial pioneers. ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION Appreciate the fundamental role that entrepreneurship plays in the business world in terms of economic contribution. Understand the different tools, mindset and values required as an entrepreneur in the fashion industry and how creative problem solving can be applied in the environment. Evaluate the business and personal skills required from creative response and risk analysis to positive self-belief and tenacity. This module combines business analysis with innovative thinking and demonstrates the need for balance between the two.

International applicants

We regret that this course is not available to international (non-EU) applicants who would require a Tier 4 Student Visa. If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate English language skills that are sufficiently developed for successful completion of your studies. We accept a range of recognised English language qualifications that are equivalent to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic minimum score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.55 Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening
