Course summary

Based within our School of Social Sciences, our research programme supports work in the core areas of national and global criminology, including violence, organised crime, state crime, policing and prisons. Our supervisors have particular expertise in the following areas of research: youth and crime, prisons and prison education, desistance from crime, Convict Criminology, immigration control, the policing of terrorism, Latin American and Asian Criminology.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a minimum classification of 2.1 in their first degree or equivalent and preferably a master's degree (or masters degree pending). Applicants whose first degree has not been studied in English should have IELTS 6.5 overall and 6.0 in all elements. Applicants need to submit a research proposal of 2,000–3,500 words. It should include a title of proposed research, identify discipline and formulate research questions clearly. It should also include proposed research methodology and plan of work and time schedule. References are normally required and if not provided with your application will be requested at a later date.
