Course summary

This is a full-time pre-service teacher training course leading to a professional qualification for teaching in Further Education colleges, Sixth Form, adult education and a wide range of other training and educational settings. With a high level of tutor support and a mature relationship with our validating partner, York College is a great place to study education or to train to be a teacher. This course is ideal if you are wishing to teach in the post-compulsory sector, which includes sixth form, further, higher and adult education such as hospitals and the prison service, as well as community and youth services, uniformed services such as the military, private training providers and large organisations with their own training departments. The course is designed and managed in partnership with the University of Huddersfield and is second in the Guardian league tables for Education five years running from 2011 to 2015. Tutors are dedicated and highly experienced, with vast knowledge stemming from their own experiences as teachers, as well as working within their vocational or academic specialist areas, offering a high number of contact hours for personal tutoring and academic support. York College and its Education Division are officially Outstanding (Ofsted 2013/2014) and you will gain a University accredited qualification and can follow this up with a professional award – QTLS or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Placements on the course are rich and varied and genuinely develop your skills in a range of environments, helping you to gain masses of real teaching experience. Much of the course is focused on practical teaching. Through your placement, you gain experience of learning and teaching alongside other professionals, with support from tutors and your mentor. Practical experience allows you to gain competence in planning teaching and learning, and in working with learners both in formal classrooms and in student-centred learning situations, such as drop-in study centres. You may already be teaching or have a placement arranged, but we give some assistance towards finding a suitable placement; we aim to place full time students, and part time students where possible, at York College for you to achieve 50 hours classroom experience per year. You will need to complete 100 hours teaching experience to complete the qualification. During the course you undertake project work, such as developing new course materials. Academic work includes critically examining creativity in teaching, subject specialist related studies, quality assurance and professional issues. Modules also allow you to explore particular areas of interest. You will study four modules as part of this course, which include: Teaching Learning and Assessment, Personal and Professional Development, Teaching a Specialist Subject and Understanding Curriculum and Professional Issues. On successful completion of the full course you will be awarded a Certificate in Education. As a qualified teacher there are opportunities for teaching your subject area in a wide range of settings. Credit points for each module may be used to progress to higher level courses such as a BA in Education and Professional Development or a Master’s Degree. This course also provides a route to teaching in schools via Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS), the full professional status for teachers in Lifelong Learning (Education and Training). Holders of QTLS are also recognised as qualified to teach in secondary schools. The course is accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and creates a direct route to Fellowship for candidates teaching at Level 4 or above.
