Course summary
With this BSc Mental Health Nursing degree, you'll develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide high-quality, evidence-based care to people experiencing challenges to their mental health. Southampton is a world-leader when it comes to nursing and you'll be taught by highly-regarded educators and researchers. Our graduates are encouraged to respond with compassion to the unique needs of all people, and you will develop a deep knowledge of person-centred care. On this course, you'll also gain key decision-making skills and the ability to manage complexity in a broad range of settings. This will prepare you for roles where you build teams and lead the development of the profession. In addition, you will: study the sciences that underpin nursing develop your skills in practice placements benefit from simulated practice and clinical skills teaching learn with and from students of other health professions become confident in embracing the technology and innovation needed to meet people's future health needs Ranked 10th in the UK for nursing (The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022), our teaching will develop you as an autonomous lead professional within the adult nursing field.
Modules
We have a varied range of modules for all years. Examples of core modules for year one will include: An Introduction to Professional Practice (BSc), Applied Health Science for Nursing Practice, Foundations of Health Sciences for Nursing Practice, Fundamental Aspects of Care, Global and Public Health, Person Centred Nursing Care, Part 1 Practice Placement 1 for BSc and MN, Part 1 Practice Placement 2 for BSc and MN. Assessment method
Assessments on this programme range from coursework, written and practical exams to projects . Assessment takes place throughout the course to ensure that you are reaching the right levels of attainment. Your practical skills will be assessed whist you are on placement and recorded by your practice mentor.

GCSEs: Minimum of GCSE Maths and English Language (A*-C or 4-9). GCSE Science (A*-C or 4-9) also required if not offered as a level 3 qualification. Certain GCSE equivalent qualifications will be considered. FETAC / QQI Level 5 120 Credits: Pass in every module, with distinction essential in at least 5 modules including Human Growth and Development (or Biology), Anatomy and Physiology and Nursing Theory. Applicants are also required to hold Ordinary Maths and English at O4 or higher. Certain FETAC modules will be accepted in lieu of these. Recent relevant study within the last 5 years. You may be required to attend a selection day and complete satisfactory Occupational Health and Police Checks.
