Course summary

This course offers training and knowledge that will help you assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal disease. Our Bioveterinary Science degree utilises the strengths of the University of Chester in the areas of biology, behaviour and welfare. These strengths offer an opportunity to study animal health not only at the physiological and cellular level, but also at the behavioural level. The first year of the course provides a comprehensive review of key concepts and skills, and teaches essential practical techniques required to practice bioveterinary science. During the second year, you will explore essential bioveterinary science subjects in depth and you will further develop your knowledge and skills. The final year of the course will strengthen your awareness of advances in bioveterinary science, and your knowledge base will be significantly broadened through a range of subject-specific modules. While studying Bioveterinary Science at Chester, you will receive a holistic approach to animal health that offers an interesting and thorough understanding of how disease impacts animals. You will also explore the wider implications of animal health, examining its impacts upon wildlife ecology and the human population, and you will focus on the diverse skills required to work in pathology laboratories that support the veterinary profession. Foundation Year courses have been designed for students who do not have the necessary academic qualifications needed to enter directly into the first year of a degree but who have the ability and commitment to do so. Once the Foundation Year has been completed successfully, you can then go on to complete your degree.

Assessment method

Assessments are designed to encourage academic and workplace skills. They include coursework and end-of-module examinations. Coursework includes essays and reports, data processing and presentations. Examinations may include multiple-choice papers, essays, practical assessments and data handling questions.

Additional fee information

All students (except Internationals) on this programme will be eligible for a £500 cash bursary – only at level 3/Foundation Year. The tuition fee for the subsequent years of study on the full-time undergraduate degree will be charged at the undergraduate degree fee level. This fee is currently £9,250 a year for students starting in 2019 but this is subject to annual inflationary rises in line with inflation at that time, as measured by the Retail Price Index.
