The foundation year will introduce you to study at university and your chosen subject. It also provides a highly supportive environment where you can develop your self-confidence. Games Design teaches you the key technical and creative skills needed to produce indie videogames for computer, mobile and console. Whether you see games as an entertainment medium, or as a uniquely interactive form of artistic expression, our Games Design degree will develop your understanding of all kinds of games by making and studying them. You’ll get a hands-on introduction to a variety of game-making engines and tools, study design and development processes, and learn about the relationships between players, the games industry, and broader culture. You’ll be encouraged to make your own games in response to a variety of short-and-long creative briefs designed to push you creatively and help you develop a portfolio which will make you stand out in the job market. You’ll make innovative and experimental play experiences, and learn to work in an environment as close to the professional world as we can make it. After your induction onto the course, you’ll be given a gaming laptop and the necessary software to make games on your degree and beyond. Specialist facilities You’ll have access to a range of excellent facilities, including our dedicated creative arts building, Daphne Oram, which houses: An extensive MAC lab home to innovative games design equipment, including high-performance PCs and high-resolution monitors. Location This course is run at our Canterbury Campus in Kent. Canterbury is just 50 miles south-east of London and less than an hour by high-speed train from St Pancras. Located on a UNESCO World Heritage Site the campus offers state-of-the-art buildings, right in the centre of a vibrant and world-famous cathedral city. You’ll benefit from a campus with excellent learning and teaching resources, music venues, a superb sports centre, a well-stocked bookshop and plenty of coffee bars and places to eat. A short walk away is Augustine House our award-winning library and home to a vast range of learning resources and student support teams.
