Course summary

The emphasis throughout the course is student centred, task orientated learning with plenty of scope for practical assignment work. Wherever possible projects, which are carried out in the second year, are to be industrially based with full involvement of industrial supervisors. This course provides a thorough grounding in all aspects of electrical and electronic engineering and combines the hardware and software subject areas demanded by the industry. This award has the following general educational aims: a) To develop a broad level of understanding of electrical and electronic engineering principles, mathematics and programming.b) To develop the ability to apply knowledge and skills gained to the solution of to a broad range of engineering problems.c) To develop the ability to assimilate and communicate information in a variety of ways including ICT.d) To prepare a student for the world of work or enhance their career prospects within existing employment through the development of a broad range of practical, personal and transferable skills.e) To make the student aware of responsibilities associated with health and safety, business, management, environmental and sustainability issues at a broad level. Successful candidates will be able to perform technical duties in posts demanding a detailed understanding of electrical and electronic engineering. They should be able to design, develop, manufacture, maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology at a high level. They will be prepared for practice as incorporated engineers and will also have the required knowledge and skills for continuing education. Level 4: Electrical & Electronic Principles, Engineering Mathematics, Electronics I, Programmable Logic Controllers, Introduction to C Programming and Embedded Systems, Instrumentation and Integrated Automation Systems, HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering Project. Level 5: Electronics II, Further Engineering Mathematics, Electrical Principles, Methods & Simulation, Control and Instrumentation, Configuration and Programming of Embedded Systems, Signals and Digital Communications, Power and Machines, Virtual Instrumentation and Control Systems, Networking Systems for Engineers, Control Engineering.

Assessment method

Examination and up to two pieces of coursework for non-project modules. Oral presentation and project reports for the project module.
