Course summary

Our MSc in Intelligent Manufacturing Systems is designed to develop engineers who will be able to play an effective role in developing and managing future manufacturing systems. These are the future systems that exploit the growth in cyber-physical technologies, colloquially know as Industry 4.0, smart factory, or factory of the future. As factories become smarter, countries around the world have started to introduce state-level initiatives to promote digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0, and there is a global need for engineers equipped with the understanding and skills to drive these initiatives. At WMG, we work at the forefront of emerging technologies, and through collaborative R&D with industry partners we drive the transfer of knowledge into new areas. As an active global player in cyber manufacturing research, WMG is well placed to drive skills development in this area. As a student of Intelligent Manufacturing Systems, you will benefit from much of the dynamic research carried out within WMG in the areas of digital manufacturing, digital lifecycle, automation systems and robotics. You will gain a thorough understanding of the ways in which product and demand characteristics influence manufacturing systems design and operation and will learn a range of relevant scientific methods to diagnose problems in the design, implementation and operation of manufacturing systems. And, by the end of the Masters course, you will be able to justify case for adopting cyber-technologies as a means to improve manufacturing system performance. This course combines value creation with strategic development in a manufacturing environment, providing you with the latest manufacturing techniques and processes. We work at the forefront of emerging technologies, and through collaborative R&D with industry partners we drive the transfer of knowledge into new areas. This course will provide students with the chance to acquire specific technical skills, most notably in computer-based modelling/simulation. To this end all students will have access to an accounts with Dassault Systems 3D Experience platform which is used by many leading automotive and aerospace companies. As a student you can also benefit from engagement with WMG’s Smart Factory Innovation Hub – a knowledge transfer hub for industrial practitioners delivered by the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and supported by WMG’s Automation Systems Group. Essentially, this course combines value creation with strategic development in a manufacturing environment, providing you with the latest manufacturing techniques and processes. You will develop an understanding of the concepts of manufacturing engineering systems and the skills to analyse, design, and implement these systems in practice. You will also gain an understanding of strategic and operational management and learn how to apply technology, quality tools, and specific techniques in order to improve operations. Throughout the year, you will be introduced to state-of-the-art manufacturing processes, technology, and materials in our world class Engineering Hall and International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing.

Modules

Please check our WMG, University of Warwick website for the most up to date information about modules for this programme. The list below is an indicative list, based on the current academic year, and it should be regarded as an illustrative guide to modules available in future years: Manufacturing Systems and Process Selection; Management for Global Manufacturing Operations; Smart Networked Manufacturing; Manufacturing Planning and Control for Cyber-Operations; System Reliability and Diagnosis; Cyber-Manufacturing Design Project; Study, Professional, and Analytical Skills. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work with some of WMG's Research Groups on an R&D module. You will be presented with the available options when you start your studies. Please visit our website for further course information.

Assessment method

The curriculum is divided in eight assessed taught modules and a major research project, written up as a dissertation.

Entry requirements

In order to meet our academic entry requirement, you should have obtained the minimum of a UK 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Engineering. Candidates with a UK 2:2 (or equivalent) may be accepted upon demonstration of relevant professional experience. Intelligent Manufacturing Systems is designed for engineering graduates interested in advanced manufacturing systems and operations management, and the move towards digital manufacturing / cyber manufacturing and Industry 4.0. It is suitable for engineers already working in industry and wanting to make that transition to engineering manager, and for recent graduates looking to fast-track their career in order to take a leading role within the manufacturing sector. A high proportion of the student cohort have prior work experience. Whilst this is beneficial, it is not essential and we are pleased to accept highly motivated recent graduates.
