Course summary

You can design your own degree from a huge range of computing topics with our flexible three-year Computer Science degree. You’ll have a choice of modules from across our suite of specialist degrees, meaning you can create a programme that’s as unique as you are. From AI and gaming, to Big Data and cyber security, focus on the computing topics that fascinate you the most. It’s innovative stuff. And it starts at Northumbria University. What will I study on the BSc in Computer Science? You’ll study core computer science topics - from programming to architecture - and graduate as an expert in software development and engineering. You’ll have plenty of choice to tailor the degree to your interests and career aspirations. Optional modules span AI, data science, networks, cyber security, games computing, and business computing. You’ll also discover the impact of computers on people and society, with modules exploring essentials questions around privacy, diversity and sustainability. Will I get professional experience on the BSc in Computer Science? Throughout the course, you’ll use specific software packages and gain industry certifications that are in high demand with employers. You’ll have plenty of chances to practice your skills too. You’ll take part in a business consultancy project in your second year, delivering an AI project for a real-life company. This can be here in Newcastle or at our partner campus in London. Plus you can opt for an optional year in industry or studying abroad.

Assessment method

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods, which may include lectures, seminars, problem-based workshops, case discussions, practical activities, group work and tutorials. Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system that will underpin your learning journey. You will have access to a Guidance Tutor with whom you can discuss any academic issues. Extensive feedback from both tutors and peers is built into the course.
