Course summary
Our joint honours course allows students to pursue their own areas of interest within Education Studies and Sociology whilst also providing them with a solid foundation in the discipline and a range of personal and professional skills which will serve as a springboard for their future career development. The programme is carefully designed to enable students to gradually develop their knowledge and skills and to become autonomous, effective and independent learners. Education Studies is the academic study of education comprising a multi-disciplinary range of modules in history, psychology, philosophy, sociology and educational research. Sociology is a wide-ranging subject concerned with analysing social relationships and social institutions and the ways in which they shape people’s lives. Links between research and undergraduate teaching are an important and distinctive feature of the programme, and the combined research experience and competencies of staff have shaped its design, content and delivery.
Modules
In the Education Studies element of the course, what you study includes: In Year 1 you will study introductory modules in the history and philosophy of education as well as the psychology and sociology of education. In Year 2 you will have an opportunity to strengthen your engagement with a number of the core disciplines or focus on particular themes in the study of education. In Year 3 you can study honours modules as well as complete a dissertation that will comprise a piece of original research. In the Sociology element of the course, what you study includes: Year 1 comprises two introductory modules which expose you to the fundamentals of sociological analysis. In Year 2 you decide how to build on this basis of sociological knowledge by choosing from a range of modules covering such topics as global social change, ‘race’ and ethnicity, gender relations, and work and employment. Year 3 includes honours modules as well as the optional dissertation module.
