History BA (Hons) at Northumbria offers a high level of flexibility as well as thorough training in the skills of the professional researcher. Alongside a small number of core modules, you can pick and choose from stimulating options that cover a rich tapestry of history, always pursuing your particular interests. These could relate to a mix of periods as well as sub-disciplines like political, cultural, intellectual, social and economic history. Northumbria’s breadth of expertise has helped us to be ranked in the top 20 of UK institutions for research in history, according to the government’s 2014 Research Excellence Framework. The course deliberately teaches transferable skills, with options for a work placement as well as a period of study abroad. The first year emphasises the acquisition of research and communication skills, the second employability and project management, and the third independent learning on a research project of your choice.
