Course summary

The University of Buckingham is:

  • Home of the two-year degree, the University of Buckingham, based in the South East of England, is ranked 6th for Student Satisfaction in the UK (National Student Survey, 2020).
  • We are proudly independent and not-for-profit, and offer courses in Allied Health, Business, Computing, Education, Humanities, Law, Medicine, Psychology and Security and Intelligence. We are one of the few universities in the UK that offer September and January start dates for almost all of our courses.
  • Based in Buckingham on a riverside campus, we are only 20 minutes’ from Milton Keynes central station and a short drive from Bicester, Aylesbury, Banbury and Northampton. There is free parking on-site and we are within easy reach of London and Oxford.
  • Our award-winning small class tutorials ensure every student is known by name and supported throughout their studies, including by dedicated personal tutors.
  • As pioneers of the two-year degree, we offer a condensed version of the traditional three-year degree, meaning you can gain a full honours degree and complete your studies a whole year earlier. Alternatively, you can complete both your undergraduate and master’s degree with us in just three years: saving you time and money.
We take great care in selecting employers to support placements and these are regularly reviewed to ensure that they remain both great places to work and learn. You will be paid, as an employee, at the same time as learning and will receive individualised support and guidance to prepare you for the workplace and be part of a nurturing, positive learning environment. You will be encouraged to challenge current thinking and engage in debates on contemporary issues and topics. By the end of your placement, you will have a deeper understanding of the way business management works in practice, linking this back to the theories and models covered in your studies. Buckingham’s multi-cultural environment will also enhance your ability to work in cross-cultural situations. You will also develop the skills and qualities necessary to work individually, in groups and in teams. You will gain employability skills in the most practical of ways and this will put you in a good place when making future career choices. As a Buckingham graduate, you will be confident, skilled, knowledgeable and ready for the next stage of your life. The BSc in Business Management degree has been recognised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). On successful completion of this course, you will also receive a CMI Level 5 Certificate in Management & Leadership. A CMI qualification better equips you for the professional world, giving you qualification that is highly sought-after in my employers. CMI is the largest professional body for Management in the UK with over 100,000 members. Business Management with a work-based placement year will equip you with a thorough understanding of work and management in the ever-changing context of world business. It will help you appreciate how organisations market themselves and their products / services, deliver them through networks, lead and manage their employees and stakeholders whilst being socially and financially responsible. It will also broaden your comprehension of contemporary issues in business (the sorts of things that you will see and hear in the news) and nurture you to be an engaged and critical learner. Buckingham has a proven track record of producing the most satisfied students and being top for teaching quality. Our excellent staff-student ratio allows us to teach our students in small classes with Oxbridge-style tutorials that give you a platform to enhance your knowledge and understanding about organisations, the external environment they operate in and the way in which these businesses are managed.

Assessment method

Teaching is carried out through a combination of lectures supported by seminars and tutorials. A key feature of the Buckingham teaching method is the use of small tutorial groups which provide the most effective means of ensuring that the students benefit from the academic expertise at their disposal. It is also the philosophy of Buckingham’s faculty to be available to students outside the scheduled tutorial times and to encourage good working relationships between staff and students. The assessment of individual modules within each course varies according to the subject. Assessment is usually by examination, assessed coursework, or a combination of the two. Please check module information for more details. Assessment during the work placement year is based around a reflective / learning log (4 x 1,500 words) compiled during the placement with a final presentation summarising learning and experience. You will have regular reviews with your placement tutor.
