This course develops the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to promote and protect public health and wellbeing. Focusing on the social determinants of health, students are equipped to fulfil a variety of roles in health promotion and public health, working in local authorities, health services or the voluntary sector. The course focuses on how people and communities can empower themselves to improve their health, and how public policy can create healthier societies and places. Students investigate the psychology of behaviour change, together with how people learn about health. The research strand will enable students to critically appraise evidence and develop research skills.

Core modules: Foundations of public health and health promotion; health communication; people power and communities; policies for health in the 21st Century; professional practice; research methods for health and wellbeing; health promotion enquiry; research and practice development.

Entry requirements

Applicants should either have at least a 2nd Class Honours degree in the cognate subjects of health, social sciences, nursing, teaching, environmental health, health visiting, community work or international development, at least a 2nd Class Honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent.
