The purpose of BTEC Higher Nationals in Business is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the business sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.

The BTEC Higher National qualifications in Business are aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning. Higher Nationals provide a wide-ranging study of the business sector and are designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in business. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the business sector, Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Business give students experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare them for further study or training.

Modules

At Level 4 (Year 1) students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the business sector through six core units, which include one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment. The units are: ● Business and the Business Environment ● Marketing Essentials ● Human Resource Management ● Management and Operations ● Management Accounting ● Managing a Successful Business Project In addition, there will be two further optional units at Level 4 from the following specialising in Financial Accounting and entrepreneurship. At Level 5 (Year 2) Higher National Diploma, students will follow the specialist pathway of Accounting and Finance, allowing students who wish to concentrate on a particular aspect of business to do so. Subject to demand, an additional programme may also consider an Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management pathway. Applicants should specify this when applying. Holders of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma will have developed a sound understanding of the principles in their field of study and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. They will have learned to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. They will be able to perform effectively in their chosen field and will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making. The mandatory units at Level 5 are: Research Project Organisational Behaviour Financial Reporting Advanced Management Accounting Financial Management In addition, there are two further optional units tailored to respond to market demand, including entrepreneurship, business strategy and brand management.

Assessment method

As part of the course, you will be assessed through a variety of assessment tasks. These include projects, portfolios, presentations, case studies, reports and research. The assessments are intended to provide maximum opportunities for you to demonstrate the links between theoretical knowledge and understanding and practice. The assessment process will be facilitated via consideration of work-based practical scenarios, in addition to reference to your own work-related practical experience where appropriate.
