This degree is suited to students who would like to gain a broad understanding of business and management, rather than specialising in a particular area of business at this stage. It is a flexible programme of study offering you a balanced approach to management, and providing a foundation of knowledge across a range of business and management principles. This course aims to help set you apart in the competitive job marketplace, developing students into modern managers working across a variety of business environments including private, public, not-for-profit and small to medium-sized enterprise sectors. Your broad range of business knowledge will equip you with the skills to allow you to progress up the management ladder and help you to build confidence in your abilities to work across different industries and businesses.

Many of our Accountancy and Finance modules attract accreditation from the professional bodies, such as Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Association of International Accountants (AIA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Our Business and Management course develops students’ fundamental business skills as well as offering the flexibility to choose subjects that interest them, and help direct their career path. Our degrees in Business and Management Studies, Human Resource Management, International Business and Management, and Marketing all share the same modules in first year. This means students gain a foundation of essential business knowledge from a leading business school. It also allows students to transfer to one of the four in the second year if they discover a new passion.

This course will help you develop transferable skills that are applicable to any business environment. Employers highly value and demand graduates who can combine a clear understanding of core business and management functions with good problem solving and decision-making skills; and this degree aims to do just that. We will develop your expertise in the fundamentals of business, equipping you with a unique bundle of contemporary business skills and knowledge that you can transfer directly into the workplace, applying the theory you’ve learned. You will be taught by leading academics who have worked professionally in a variety of sectors throughout the world of business and management, learning from their experience and expertise. They will provide you with examples that can be applied to a range of business contexts.

Modules

Year one (all core modules) - Business Economics, Foundations of Marketing, Introduction to Accounting, Operations and Information Systems Management, People, Work and Organisations, Quantitative Methods in Information Management, Student Self-Development.

Year two - Two core modules, Business Law and Employability and Enterprise Skills. The remaining are options, Business Information Systems, Capital Markets, Investment and Finance, Company Law and Administration, Consumer Behaviour, Econometrics and Business Forecasting, Economics of Industry, Employee Relations, Financial Accounting, Financial Management, Fundamentals of Decision Support, Integrated Marketing Communications, Management Accounting, Management of Service Operations, Marketing Management and Strategy, Marketing Research, Organisational Analysis, Organisational Design, Principles of Personal Finance, Resource Planning for Operations, The Transformation of Work.

Year three – Students are required to choose from the following: Applied Strategic Management, Auditing, Brand Management, Contemporary Issues in Accounting, Corporate Marketing, Corporate Reporting, Creativity and Innovation, Creativity in Marketing, Decision Support, Electronic Commerce, Enterprise and Innovation in Practice, Ethics in Business and Society, Global Business Environment, Human Resource Development, Human Resource Management, International Accounting, International and Comparative Employment Relations, International Business Strategy, International Finance, International Marketing, Managing Business in Europe, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Organisational Change, Personal Financial Planning, Portfolio Investment Management, Retail Marketing, Services Marketing, Strategic Information Systems, Sustainable Operations Management, Taxation, The Financial Services Sector and its Environment, Understanding Strategic Management, World Class Operations. Please note that not all options will be available every year as they depend on student demand and staff availability. Students will be given the opportunity to state their preferences and the School of Management will do its best to accommodate these.

Assessment method

Most modules use a mixture of formal lectures, tutorials and seminars. All modules require students to undertake independent study, supported through distance learning technologies such as our Virtual Learning Environment. Reading lists and suggested resources for independent study provide further direction for students to undertake this work, and regular contact hours and informal feedback throughout the courses provide opportunities for further guidance for learners.

Assessments involve a combination of coursework assessments and formal examinations held at the end of each semester, the first-year assessments aim to measure your progress and the assessments that count towards the classification of your degree are held in the second and final years.

The standard University requirement is IELTS 6.0 with no sub-test less than 5.0 (or equivalent). However, if you require a Tier 4 (student) visa to study you will need to meet the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department's requirement which is currently IELTS 6.0 with no sub-test less than 5.5. Conditional offers to international students will be made on this basis.
