If you didn’t get the UCAS points to enrol on a computer gaming or digital arts degree, or if you’re returning to education or looking for a career change, this foundation year will help you develop the core skills and knowledge to be able to progress on to one of our undergraduate degrees in digital arts or computer gaming.

Southampton Solent’s digital arts foundation year covers key subjects such as animation, game development and modelling, and will help equip you with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about your future direction.

The learning path is designed to seamlessly integrate with our related degree courses and offers flexible learning experiences in the field of digital media. Successful completion of the programme will grant direct access on to one of our related industry-focused undergraduate degrees.

You will be taught by passionate staff who are experts in their fields, with a wealth of real-world experience and knowledge. During your studies you’ll be supported in developing your game production, business and entrepreneurial skills, as well as working with coders and artists in the Video Games Academy.

To aid study, you’ll have full access to Solent’s industry-standard facilities, including specialist labs, high-end dual screen computers equipped with industry software such as Autodesk, Adobe and Pixologic, and graphics tablets. You’ll also have access to a motion capture studio and lounge equipped with consoles and life drawing studio. Successful completion of the Digital Arts foundation year will provide a pathway to the Digital Animation Degree. Southampton Solent University’s cutting-edge digital animation programme focuses on digital character creation, from original concept right through to rigging, animation, composition and final performance. The curriculum is structured to help equip you with both the broad base of knowledge and the specialised expertise you’ll need to get your career off to the right start.

To ensure that graduates are fully prepared for life after university, the course includes modules specifically designed to help them better fit into modern creative workplaces. The ‘industry practise’ module teaches a range of transferable project management and presentation skills, while the optional freelance animation module helps students develop an understanding of basic business practises and theories.

Students will bring their concepts to life using our industry-standard animation facilities - learning the full production process from first draft storyboarding to advanced filmmaking techniques.

This three year programme also gives students the time and support necessary to create a varied professional portfolio that’s perfectly suited to securing paid positions after graduation.

Our in-house creative agency provides students with additional opportunities to pitch for paid work with commercial clients – past Solent Creative clients include Bear Grylls, Southampton Airport and Southampton City Council.
