This course is for stylists or managers currently working or planning the next stage of their education and training in the hairdressing industry. You will learn current industry techniques or develop those that you have already been introduced to at a lower level and you will also build a strong foundation in the theories and background knowledge of the profession. An important feature of the course is the opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and experience of management, leading people and making effective business decisions thus increasing salon revenue. Throughout your studies you will be offered support in the development of relevant study skills such as academic, ICT, independent learning, communication and time management. The teaching and learning strategies typically used by tutors on the course include lectures, seminars, practical workshops and tutorial. You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study.

Assessment method

This course has been designed with a focus on management, employability and business acumen to give you the skills that
you will need to progress in your career. Special features of the course include:

• The college has extensive industry links with a wide range of employers in the hairdressing industry, providing you with the opportunity to visit a range of salons and other workplaces. You will also have the opportunity to attend workshops/masterclasses given by guest speakers.
• You will take part in a period of managed work experience at level 5 of the programme allowing you to gain employability skills directly relevant to the workplace.
• The first year of the course focuses on salon management, new practical skills, emerging trends and technological developments, while the second year provides business training that includes, for example, modules in human resource management, small business enterprises, working with and leading people and business psychology to help enable you to become a salon manager, start up your own business or run your business more effectively.
