The use of computer technology is now pervasive within modern day society – crucial in electrical devices as diverse as tablets to traffic lights, air conditioning to air traffic control. As potential uses of technology grow, so too does the demand for developers and software engineers capable of designing and implementing such applications.
Fully endorsed by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), this course enables you to register with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer on completion. It provides a broad technical education in the hardware and software aspects of computer systems engineering and applications development.
You’ll have access to facilities, placement opportunities at companies which have previously included the National Grid, GlaxoSmithKline, Severn Trent Water and Mercedes Benz and an annual programme of inspiring lectures on contemporary engineering and computing topics presented by the IET and British Computer Society (BCS).
The first year is designed to allow students from a diverse range of backgrounds to make a solid start on the course.
Computer Engineering looks at the building blocks of computers and how they communicate, while Electrical Engineering covers essential electrical circuits and power systems topics to give you the ability to power large computer systems reliably and efficiently. In Electronics, we explore the digital logic and electronic circuits which are the foundation of computer hardware engineering.
The second year introduces the study of engineering management, which covers the business organisation, finances, contract law, health and safety and human resources issues that you will encounter while working in commercial engineering. We continue to develop your knowledge of programming and operating systems, together with electronics and computer networks.
During the year, you will participate in a microprocessors group project, which allows you to apply appropriate theoretical and practical project management methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products. Previously, students have designed wireless electronic remote lock system and robotics with obstacle detection and remote communication capabilities.
Optional Placement Year
Following your second year, you will have an option to apply for a one-year professional work placement or study abroad in a partner institution.
Past students have undertaken placements working as a trainee system test engineer at Halliburton, trainee operational analyst at IBM and trainee network operations engineer at BlackBerry in the UK.
In the final year, you will continue your studies in software and electronics but with a focus on individual projects in which you will perform a detailed research or design study with the help of an experienced supervisor into a technical aspect from the course.
You can choose a topic to suit your interests or to assist your career aspirations, with past students having worked on train diagnostics interface system for Spherea GmbH, designing and building a brand new MCC (Motor Control Centre) for Coalport STW and flat panel implementation of a Lava Lamp for Morph Designs.
