Staffordshire University has opted into the TEF and received a Gold award.
Our Automotive and Motorsport Engineering degree offers students the chance to work with suppliers, manufacturers, and specialists in the automotive and motorsport sectors.
Our automotive and motorsport degrees have always been popular with students. Developed with the assistance of the automotive and motorsport industries, our degrees will prepare you for a career at the forefront of automotive and motorsport design.
Both our BEng (Hons) and integrated MEng courses focus on mechanical engineering aspects of the automotive and motorsport field. If you want to work with suppliers, manufacturers and specialist enterprises in the automotive and motorsport sectors - with companies such as Bentley, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover and JCB - either course could meet your goals.
With experienced lecturers, and support from race drivers, engineers and team owners, each degree has been designed to ensure your knowledge covers the most up-to-date practices from the sector. At the same time, access to our industry standard rolling road and other technologies will help hone your design and engineering skills.
Our facilities include computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA) and Ricardo WAVE engine simulation and analysis software. We also have strong work placement links, as well as a fully equipped workshop where you will be able to get hands on experience using our industry standard rolling road, road, track and race cars, gaining valuable experience as part of your study.
You’ll be encouraged to compete in the IMechE Formula student competition, as well as other race experiences. If you’re looking to gain hands-on industry experience, our links with organisations such as Slidesports Race Engineering, and Ginetta could provide the opportunity of a placement.
Students on the MEng route undertake an additional year of Graduate level study which deepens your skills and understanding within the Automotive and Motorsport sector.
On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: MEng Automotive and Motorsport Engineering.
Year 1: Fundamentals of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering & Thermofluids, Introduction to Engineering Design & Practice, Introduction to Engineering Mathematics, Professional Development & Engineering Applications. Year 2: Mechanical Structures, Automotive & Motorsport Principles, Intermediate Engineering Mathematics, Automation & Control Engineering, Design Engineering, Aerodynamics, Leadership & Management, Team Design Project for Sustainability Year 3: Applied Automotive & Motorsport Principles, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Emerging Technologies & Innovation in Engineering, Individual Engineering Project, Structures & FEA, Professional Engineer Year 4: Automotive Propulsion Systems, Engineering Design and Manufacture, Advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics, Advanced Vehicle Dynamics plus 2 optional modules
The assessment methods used with the programme are varied, formative and develop your transferable skills as well as your technical ability. Your ability to plan, judge, communicate complex issues, solve problems logically, and develop original solutions, in appraising critically the work of others, and in managing your own learning are all assessed within aspects of the programme. In addition, your technical understanding of the context of your work alongside that of others, your breadth of study, and also the depth of your specialist area of study, are also key to the assessment process.
