Find out more about the TEF.

Medicinal and biological chemistry are central pillars of drug design, covering the skills, techniques and understanding crucial to a career in the development, testing and production of new treatments. So, while this course is rooted in general chemistry – offering a good grounding in broad principles, research methods and laboratory techniques – it’s a specialist course, designed in conjunction with industry to equip you with the knowledge and abilities employers want.

That means you’ll explore everything from the sources of drug molecules, mechanisms of drug action, computational drug modelling, spectroscopy and the preparation of drug molecules, to biochemistry, physiochemical processes, medicinal chemistry, bioinorganic and bioorganic chemistry. You’ll have scope to focus on areas like biomedical or health science units, and you’ll finish off your chemistry degree with a research project of your own design.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS:

  • This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, reflecting our professional standards and standing within the discipline of chemistry.

  • We've invested over a million pounds in upgrading our synthetic chemistry and materials laboratories.

  • Our teaching is supported by a range of technological innovations including videos to support the learning of key concepts and problem-solving practice.

  • You can opt for a four-year route, with the third year of your degree spent on an industry placement or studying abroad with one of our partner institutions in Europe, North America or Australasia.
