This highly practical and creative course consists of three main strands: Specialist Study (intensive one-to one tuition and ensemble work), Contextual Studies that will broaden your awareness as a musician and Professional Studies (a range of study areas that will provide you with key skills that will enable you to position yourself as a highly employable musician). You will enjoy frequent performance opportunities in a range of ensembles including Chamber Choir, Orchestra, Opera and LCoM’s vibrant New Music Collective. Classical musicians at this conservatoire are uniquely placed to collaborate in an environment that includes students of jazz and popular music as well as production and music business students.

Principal study options

During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:

Single specialism

Only one instrument is studied. It may be possible to study a further instrument formatively, but this will not contribute towards the qualification.

Instrument/specialisms

For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.

Assessment method

The pathway is assessed via performance recitals/composition portfolios, technical tests, online portfolios, presentations and written work. The degree is weighted 30% on Level 5 and 70% on Level 6. The exact nature of assessments will depend on the Contextual Studies and Professional Studies choices that are made at Level 5 and Level 6. Formal assessments tend to take place at the end of each semester or the end of the year. There are a handful of assignments that have deadlines halfway through a semester.

UCAS Tariff 96 points From level 3 studies or equivalent, which normally include A Level Music or a BTEC Extended Diploma in a Music-related subject.

Audition

Audition – Classical applicants will be required to attend an audition. Auditions will be taking place week commencing 22 October 2018, week commencing 17 December and week commencing 11 February.

Performance standard (assessed at audition):
Performers are expected to demonstrate at audition a playing/singing standard of Grade 8 (commensurate with ABRSM, London College of Music, Trinity College, Rock School (as appropriate for the pathway)).

Composers/songwriters are expected to demonstrate at audition a playing/singing standard of Grade 6 (commensurate with ABRSM, London College of Music, Trinity College, Rock School (as appropriate for the pathway)).

Musical theory standard (assessed at audition):
Applicants’ understanding of applied music theory will be assessed at audition where they will be asked questions about the theoretical elements of the pieces they have played to ensure that they are suitable for the course.
