The Business Management BSc (Hons) gives a solid grounding in the key areas of business management and provides the essential skills and tools required by the manager. These include strategy, marketing, finance, operations management, accounting, people and organisations, economics, business statistics and human resource management.

This degree is designed for students who want to gain a broad understanding of the way organisations work. Not just considering individual business functions as “silos” but seeing they are interdependent. You will develop analytical and problem-solving skills which can be applied across these different functions. You will understand why businesses are complex and how to navigate the issues created by this complexity.

You will not only gain a thorough understanding of the academic theory that exists around management but will also learn to apply the theory to the actual business of running an organisation. Within the degree, you will have the option to choose from a wide range of elective modules, which allows you to personalise your studies to suit your own interests.

A key part of this degree is the opportunity to gain professional work experience. You can apply for a one-year paid work placement which takes place during the third year of a four-year sandwich degree course. You will benefit from a wide range of opportunities in business areas such as finance, marketing and human resource management.

The Business Management degree provides a sound basis for a career in business management, management consultancy, or in areas including finance, stockbroking, marketing and IT. It also provides a firm grounding for students setting out as entrepreneurs.

There are five Business Mangement degree pathways taught at Cass Business School: BSc Business Management, BSc Business with Finance, BSc Business with Marketing, BSc Business Management, Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship and BSc International Business. At any time during the first-one-and-a-half years of the degree, students can switch to a different pathway, subject to the availability of places. Some restictions may apply if the student is spending part of the second year on a study abroad scheme.

Modules

Core modules, common to all the business management degrees, provide a solid grounding in the principles and practice of all fundamental aspects of business management.

Core modules on the Business Management pathway include: Introduction to Management; Fundamentals of Marketing; Technology and Innovation Management; Introduction to Finance; Introduction to Entrepreneurship; Human Resources Management; Business in Society.

A choice of specialised electives is offered in years two and three to strengthen your knowledge and skills and to introduce you to the most recent trends and issues in their theory and practice. Third year electives cover a range of topics and are not restricted to the specialist areas represented by the individual degree pathways.

In year three, you also have the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to pursue in-depth independent research and study on a business-related theme of your choice in the form of the final-year project.

Assessment method

Most modules are assessed by a combination of exams and coursework.

The balance of assessment by coursework (assessed essays and assignments) unseen examinations and a final year project will to some extent depend on the optional modules you choose.

The first year of your programme contributes 10% to your final degree classification, the second year 30% and the final year 60%.
