These degrees offer a unique combination of complementary knowledge and skills in Electronic and Software Engineering. Electronic Engineering is at the core of the modern world, from computers, to digital circuits, photonics and a wealth of electronic devices. This exciting new programme delivers the ideal marriage between Electronic engineering and Software engineering, allowing graduates to pursue a wide range of engineering interests and career choices. You will use your imagination, creativity and knowledge to provide society with the complex electronic systems it needs as well as the software required to operate these systems optimally. In your future career you may design the machines that supply our energy needs, digital control systems for aircrafts, internet-enabled sensors, design complete computer systems on a silicon chip, photonics to instrument the ocean depths, create stunning electronic displays, or design the latest communications satellite or mobile phone.

Students will learn how to design, analyse and implement large-scale software solutions, factoring in hardware and electronics specifics. The courses will cover core computing topics such as computer architecture, programming, programming languages, algorithms, databases, software project management, and software engineering tools and techniques. Advanced computing topics include distributed (autonomous) systems, knowledge technologies, Internet-of-Things, sensor networks, robotics, and security.

Assessment method

Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course; practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course; and written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, years of study and individual courses.

Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.

A level ABB AB required in Mathematics and Physics or a B in Design and Technology or a B in Engineering. If applicant presents with B in Physics, Design and Technology or Engineering, Mathematics must be A grade. GCSE English at C.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) DDD DDD with Mathematics and Physics required. GCSE at C or above in English or English Language, Mathematics and in either Chemistry or Physics or Dual Award Science.
Note: BTEC in Applied Sciences is not normally sufficient on its own for entry into any of our Engineering programmes.
Scottish Higher AABB AB required in Mathematics and Physics/Engineering Science (previously known as Technological Studies). If applicant presents with H in Engineering Science instead of Physics, Mathematics must be A grade.
English at Standard Grade 1, 2 or 3 or National 5 at grades A, B or C.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 34 points 34 Points including Mathematics and Physics at HL (6 or above) and English at Standard Level.

Additional fee information

International Applicants: When you are thinking about studying overseas, it is important that you understand all the costs involved and budget accordingly. It is essential to budget for your studies prior to leaving your home country, and arrange all your funding for BOTH your tuition fees and your living costs. Our new fixed fee structure means that new international undergraduates (excluding Medicine) are charged the same tuition fee each year, for the duration of their programme of study. Rest of UK (RUK) Applicants: Tuition fees for entry at the University of Aberdeen, for students domiciled in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are £9,250 per annum, but the University has capped this so that no student will pay more than £27,750 in total for their three or four year Honours degree, or £37,000 for a five year Honours degree (with the exception of Medicine). There are no up-front tuition fees, as you can apply for a government loan to cover the fees. The loan is not repayable until after graduation.
