BTEC Higher Nationals are designed to provide a specialist vocational programme, The programme is clearly linked to professional body requirements. They offer a strong, sector-related emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding.

Main aims of the course are:
Providing education and training for a range of careers in the travel and tourism sector
Providing opportunities for employees of travel and tourism facilities to achieve nationally
recognised Levels 4 and 5 vocationally specific qualification

Providing opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enter employment in travel and tourism or to progress to higher education vocational qualifications such as a degree in a related area

Developing the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners in the field of travel and tourism

Providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills, techniques and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Providing flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for future studies and career development in travel and tourism.

Applicants should be a minimum of 18 years and have at least two A levels (grade C) or an equivalent level e.g. BTEC National Diploma .

Mature Applicants
We are committed to widening participation and will consider applicants who can show evidence of experiential learning that is equivalent to the required formal qualifications. If you have been out of education for a few years but have relevant vocational experience in a relevant area, accreditation of prior experience will be considered as an alternative entry requirement.

All candidates will be required to attend an interview where their ability to undertake the course will be assessed.

On completion of the course you will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and characteristics of tourism as an area of academic and applied study including being able to understand and appreciate the potential contributions of disciplines that help you explain the nature and development of tourism.

Explain and challenge theories and concepts which are used to understand tourism.

Explain and challenge the definitions, nature and operations of tourism.

Demonstrate an understanding of the domestic and international nature and dimensions of tourism.

Utilise a range of source material in investigating tourism.

Demonstrate an awareness of the dynamic nature of tourism in modern societies.

Understand the intercultural dimensions of tourism.
