The BTEC HNC in Graphic Design offers those who hold a passion for visual communication the opportunity to explore graphic design theory and practice through a range of digital and traditional methods.

Overview
The HNC is a specialist work-related programme of study which covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in today's graphic design industry. The course offers a strong, sector-related emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding.

The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the graphic design sector and the national recognition by employers allows direct progression to employment.

This course has been developed to focus on:

Providing education and training for a range of careers in graphic design

Providing opportunities to gain a nationally recognised vocationally-specific qualification to enter employment in design or progress to Higher Education vocational qualifications such as a full-time degree in graphic design or a related area

Developing the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners in the field of graphic design

Providing opportunities for learners to focus on the development of higher-level skills in graphic design context

Providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills, techniques and attributes essential for successful performance in working life

Developing critical awareness and the ability to research and understand complex information

Developing skills in communication and presentation.

Course Structure
The HNC in Graphic Design comprises of four core topics and four specialist topics:
Core Topics:
Visual Communication
Ideas Generation and Development
Contextual and Cultural Referencing
Professional Practice

Specialist Topics:
Graphic Image Making
Advertising Campaigns
Typographic Skills
Design Method

Following successful completion of the Level 4 HNC in Graphic Design you can choose to progress onto the Level 5 HND in Graphic Design.

Teaching and Learning
You will attend approximately 11 - 12 hours of workshops, lectures and tutorials each week over a period of 34 weeks. The course will be taught with an approach that delivers:
A balance between practical skills development and knowledge acquirement

Links made between theory and practice in the workplace

Utilisation of Industry Knowledgeable staff

Links and work with industry employers

Opportunities to apply learning to actual events within the sector through working upon live creative briefs.

Students will have access to a Higher Education Study Room with Apple Macs. The teaching computers are Apple Mac Minis and iMacs, using Adobe Creative Cloud giving them access to the latest versions of Illustrator, In Design, Photoshop, Muse alongside other essential programmes.

Assessment
The HNC in Graphic Design is assessed continuously through a range of assessments, projects, group projects, lectures, workshops and formative tasks. Each successfully completed unit will be graded as a Pass, Merit or Distinction. The process of assessment is part of the effective planning of teaching and learning and provides opportunities for both the learner and assessor to obtain information about progress towards learning goals.

Progression
The HNC in Graphic Design is a one year Higher Education course, providing natural progression onto the HND, or alternatively direct entry into employment. Following successful completion of the HNC qualification, students can choose to enrol for a second year (full-time) and upgrade their qualification to the HND in Graphic Design. The HND can then be advanced to a full degree (Level 6) by attending a second or third year degree (or honours degree) at a University.
