Summary: Biology touches all areas of our life, from the microscopic working of our cells to immune evasion strategies of bacteria. This programme is broad in content, drawing on recent technological and theoretical advances in the field. It covers topics ranging from the complexities of the genetic code to ecosystems on land, helping to keep your career options as wide as possible. You can complete an optional work placement year.
Course details: This degree emphasises how understanding genetic, cellular, organism, ecological and evolutionary biology can be employed to benefit humankind and improve the environment. We draw on our local biotechnology industry and links with national experts to enhance your learning, ensuring you develop comprehensive knowledge and skills relevant to current industry and employer requirements. Your learning includes extensive development of a range of laboratory techniques, professional and employment skills (which are highly regarded by employers) as well as a thorough understanding of biological principles. This learning culminates in a major research project in the final year, which is often linked to industrially significant applications.
After the course: Graduates are sought by a wide range of industries and organisations including food production, pharmaceuticals, environmental agencies, hospitals and government laboratories. Some graduates also go into teaching or do research and development work.

The course provides a number of contact teaching and assessment hours (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, projects, examinations), but you are also expected to spend time on your own - self-study time - to review lecture notes, prepare coursework assignments, work on projects and revise for assessments. Part of your course also involves a substantial research-based project.
One module in each year of your study involves a compulsory one-week block delivery period. This intensive problem-solving week, provides you with an opportunity to focus your attention on particular problems and enhance your team-working and employability skills. Your learning involves different types of assessment including coursework assignments and examinations.

Applicants are normally invited for interview. Each applicant will receive an individualised offer following an interview. In cases where an interview cannot take place the typical offer will be 112 tariff points from at least 2 A levels or equivalent, one of which should be Biology. Key skills Level 3 and General Studies A level may be accepted.
