This course offers you a flexible programme of academic study to develop and improve your role in either a primary or secondary school or a college or other post-compulsory organisation. We have designed varied routes so you can develop the skills and knowledge appropriate to your context, role and interests. You will spend one day each week in College and a minimum of two days equivalent study in your educational setting. Time spent in an educational setting may be on a paid or voluntary basis and it is your responsibility to arrange this placement. A strong element of work-based learning ensures that your studies directly apply to your practice in education. By the end of the course you will be able to: appreciate the variety of roles played by professionals and practitioners in education and become better in your own role; develop personal skills and a broad understanding of education Identify your own place and contribution to education; develop the personal and professional skills to make that contribution; understand and contribute to current national initiatives.This course will enable you to develop expertise in curriculum subjects in the primary sector or special needs and pastoral care. This course enables you to work alongside others who work in a similar role but in a wide range of educational organisations and sectors. Your future career will be built on a solid foundation of the highest academic standards of teaching and learning as many of our teaching staff are experts in their fields. You will be treated as an individual, with degrees often tailored to suit your individual experience, knowledge and interests, helping to support your personal growth and development. This Foundation Degree provides you with 240 credit points of Undergraduate study to help you pursue further qualifications e.g. Honours degree level, Qualified Teacher Status, or to apply for promoted support posts in schools or colleges such as Higher Level Teaching Assistant, cover supervisor or mentor. You could progress to the BA (Hons) Supporting Learning in Education or the BA (Hons) Teaching and Learning in the Primary Phase to become a primary teacher.

Periodic Review is a monitoring and review activity undertaken by all universities/colleges delivering HE programmes. Students will study 3 compulsory core modules and 3 optional modules for each stage of the course. Sessions are delivered one day per week with compulsory core modules in the afternoon, subject modules (maths, language and science) in the morning and supporting option modules aimed at supporting special needs and pastoral care for secondary and post-compulsory staff in the evening. The routes can be mixed if this is what you require to enhance your role.Stage one - compulsory modules: Preparing to Learn; Foundations of Teaching and Learning; Developing the Classroom Team. Subject option modules: Supporting Language; Supporting Mathematics; Applications of ICT in Teaching and Learning. Supporting option modules: Behaviour Management; Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties; Promoting Foreign Languages. Stage Two - compulsory modules: Safeguarding Young People; Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners in Education; Research for Personal and Academic Use. Subject option modules: Developing Science Enquiry; Managing Language; Managing Mathematics. Supporting option modules: Learning through Educational Visits; Mentoring and Coaching; Understand Autism; Supporting the Mobility of Learners with Visual Impairment. Other options can include: Bradford College Certificate in Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN); Speech Language and Communication Needs in Education Settings; Erasmus European Learning.
You will require a mentor in your setting to support and guide you. The teaching team will also observe you working in your organisation and offer developmental guidance. Specific modules will also involve workplace-based assessment tasks. You will also visit and observe practitioners within your institution and in other settings. Teaching is as interactive as possible, allowing you to fully participate in sessions. You will work with a group of students throughout the course which will enable you to develop strong, supportive relationships. Tutors will require you to reflect on your practice and contribute to all sessions. Assessment can take many forms including essays, presentations, or portfolios. These will draw upon your experience and knowledge. You will be briefed by your module tutor on the module assessment and will receive support and guidance for its completion.

Employment in a school (this is preferred for the full-time route) or ongoing voluntary placement in a school (placement to be arranged by the student),is a requirement for admission. Admission may be considered with advanced standing subject to recognition of prior certificated learning or experience (RPEL). Students who do not fully meet the GCSE requirements but have considerable school experience may be considered.
