Software Engineering (with integrated year in industry) Aberystwyth University

Undergraduate

Awarded by: Aberystwyth University (Prifysgol Aberystwyth)

This career enhancing, five-year integrated Master's degree in Software Engineering with an integrated year in industry at Aberystwyth University is accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT and is concerned with the production of large, high-quality, and often long-lived, software systems. Work in this area requires not only a deep understanding of software and related technologies but also an appreciation of the management and professional issues associated with the development of large systems.

This degree will prepare you for a variety of careers in specialist fields such as software design, communications and networking, computer applications, web development, IT consultancy and management, systems analysis and development, computer sales and marketing, and education. The advantage of choosing an integrated Masters degree is that you can apply for a student loan for the full duration of the course, rather than seeking funding for a Masters after completing your first degree.

At Aberystwyth University, we endeavour to provide you with an exceptional and memorable student experience. By studying BEng Software Engineering you will learn to program in a number of different languages with emphasis on the production of robust and secure code that is based on sound design and development principles. You will gain experience of large-scale software development, telecommunications and distributed systems technologies. This degree will also cover database management systems and secure data handling as well as professional and management issues in software engineering.

Your first year will introduce you to programming, computer infrastructure and web development. You will go on to study databases, algorithms, data structures, development processes, techniques and technologies for constructing real operational software. You will be taught by enthusiastic staff through a complementary set of teaching and learning methods and approaches, ranging from formal lectures, seminars and tutorials to practical, individual and group-based project work. You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues.

Employability skills are the core values of our degree. As part of your degree, you will be required to take part in a residential weekend where you and other students will have work in teams to solve problems. This activity will encourage and improve your skills in communication, analysis, time management, independent and group-based working, organisation, implementation, research and technical skills. Industrial Year students can join a second-year residential weekend concentrating on skills to help you find a great placement. These include: CV skills, interview technique practice, networking with employers and developing your online presence. Additional advice on CV and interview technique may be sought at our Careers Advisory Service.

The skills acquired from this course are sought after by employers in computer science-related industries.

Applicants are selected on their individual merits and offers can vary. We allow you flexibility in meeting our entry requirements, and all qualifications that you have already gained, or are working towards, will be considered when reviewing your application. We have an inclusive policy which recognises a broad range of qualifications. The entry requirements listed here represent typical offers for some of the most popular qualifications taken by applicants. We still use the UCAS tariff to determine whether you have met the terms of our offer, so whatever qualifications you are taking, provided these are included in the UCAS tariff and provided you meet the overall points total (and any specific subject requirements) you may still receive an offer. This means that if your course requires 3 A levels at BBB, we will accept other grade combinations that are equivalent to the same number of tariff points. For example A levels ABC and AAD equate to 120 UCAS tariff points). Applicants studying a mixture of qualifications (e.g. A Level with BTEC) are also warmly welcomed. If you cannot find the qualification(s) that you are studying (or have previously studied) please contact our Undergraduate Admissions Office (Telephone: +44 (0)1970 622021; Email: ug-admissions@aber.ac.uk) for advice on your eligibility and details of the typical offer you are likely to receive.

Additional fee information

Based on the latest information available to us, for new Home/EU students enrolled on full-time undergraduate and PGCE courses starting in 2019, Aberystwyth University currently intends to charge a tuition fee of £9,000 for the academic year 2019/20 (Home/EU). The Welsh Government is still to finalise arrangements for 2019/20 onwards, which means that for students starting in 2019/20 or after, tuition fees may rise for any successive years of study, mapped according to any inflation-linked maximum tuition fee permitted by the Welsh Government. These increases would also apply for the proportional fees charged for Year Abroad and Year in Industry. We will inform all applicants and students of the fee levels for 2019/20 and any inflation-linked increases for successive years of study as soon as confirmation is received from Welsh Government, and we will publish updates on our website. We recommend you check the updated fee information before applying. Up to date details of the relevant fees will be set out in our offer documentation, and your terms and conditions with us will describe how we may be entitled to increase or otherwise change fees during the period of your study with us. The fees position is different for overseas students. Costs not included in the tuition fee: The academic provision of the University includes certain elements of study away from Aberystwyth. These involve activities such as field trips in science degrees and visits to theatres, galleries and museums in humanities-based courses. The additional costs of such activities are not included in the overall University fee and you should, therefore, note the need to budget for them. Details of courses that have additional costs can be found on the Aberystwyth University website. These costs are given as an indication of likely cost and will vary as will the location and duration of the activity. Fuller details will be available from the department organising the activity.
